JOHOR BARU: Be honest in everything you do, do it wholeheartedly or do not do it at all.

These were the words that 21-year-old Alifah Ilyana Soharto, from Miri, Sarawak, lives by.

Alifah received Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Vice-Chancellor Award, which is the university’s highest award.

It is given to students who not only excel in their studies but are also active in extracurricular activities.

Alifah, who received her Diploma In Computer Science from UTM Kuala Lumpur, was announced as the recipient of the award during UTM’s 63rd convocation ceremony.

During an interview, she revealed that while studying for her diploma, she held positions in the university’s student bodies while also playing netball and softball.

“Sports helps me de-stress but I will always be clear about my responsibility as a student.

“Even with a busy schedule, there should always be time for studies, ” she said, adding that she enjoyed studying together with her course mates as opposed to doing so alone.

A fellow UTM KL student was also honoured at the event with the Excellent Student Award.

Lois Chong Xiao Shiuan, 21, who hails from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, received the award for achieving a perfect CGPA of 4.0 for her Diploma in Civil Engineering.

Chong, who is now pursuing a degree in the same course, said her success was a blessing from the heavens.

“Trusting in God would be my advice to those who want to succeed in anything they do.

“But trusting without effort would mean little so it is important to study diligently as well, ” she said, adding that her friends from secondary school are also students in UTM and helped to boost her morale.

Both Alifah and Chong received a trophy, medal, certificate and mock cheque for RM300 and RM250 respectively.

The event also saw some 77 diploma holders from UTM receive the Deacon Award for obtaining a CGPA of 3.67 or higher, and they were presented with a gold badge.

Another 14 students under UTM SPACE, which is a faculty for part-time and open learning students, also received the award.

UTM SPACE managing director and chief executive officer Prof Dr Azlan Abd Rahman was present at the event, and he encouraged those who graduated to further their studies.

“I believe this convocation is not your last, as most of you have already made plans to take your degree.

“Some may be considering entering the working world first before continuing their studies, ” he said, adding that students should do what they saw fit and not give in to peer pressure.
